March 17 McCain Questions

Three Questions McCain's Campaign Won't Answer

Special Iraq Edition

March 17, 2008

1. After visiting Iraq, does McCain agree with General Petreus's assessment that Iraqi government isn't making enough progress toward national reconciliation and providing basic public services?  If so, what is McCain's plan moving forward?

2. Why did John McCain's campaign insist that his trip to Europe and the Middle East was purely business and not political when they knew they were planning a campaign fundraiser in London? Are they planning fundraisers or political events in any other cities?  Is McCain planning to use any time on this trip for political call time or any other campaign activities?

3. Is it true that, as the LA Times reported this weekend, McCain has been taking a hard line on national security issues publicly while privately telling moderate Republicans that those positions don't necessarily reflect his real views?

Tough Statements "Don't Necessarily Reflect His Real Views.  "According to Dmitri Simes of the Nixon Center, McCain "has privately assured prominent supporters in the traditional foreign policy camp that 'his more exuberant statements don't necessarily reflect his real views.'"

McCain's Foreign Policy Tough Talk Aimed At Assuaging Conservatives. "Some of the realists in McCain's camp believe that some of his public pronouncements during the long primary season have followed from his need to build Republican support at a time when many conservatives have been distressed by his views on immigration and campaign finance, to name only two issues."  [Los Angeles Times, 3.16.08]

McCain Promising Jobs to Neocons AND Realists.  "One sign of the internal contradictions in his views is growing friction between rival camps of McCain supporters -- between neoconservatives and those with more traditional views, widely called 'realists.' Both sides believe they have assurances from McCain that he would largely follow their path, and that like-minded allies would have key roles in the new administration." [Los Angeles Times, 3.16.08]
