The Democratic Party of Virginia adopted the Virginia Delegate Selection Plan for the 2008 Democratic National Convention following a 30-day public comment period.

The plan formally describes the process of how the Democratic Party of Virginia will select its delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention to be held in Denver, Colorado the week of August 25-28.

The Democratic Party of Virginia will send 103 delegates and 14 alternates to the national convention in Denver. Eighteen of the 103 delegates are automatically allocated to party leaders. In May 2008, 54 delegates and 11 alternates will be elected at Congressional District Conventions. An additional 20 at large delegates, 11 party leader and elected official delegates, and 3 alternates will be elected at the Virginia State Democratic Convention in June 2008.

The allocation of the delegates to Democratic presidential candidates will be based on the presidential preference primary, which will be held February 12, 2008.

Included in the plan is the appointment of an Affirmative Action Committee whose mission will be to make the delegate selection process accessible to all Virginia Democrats.

"Our goal is to have an inclusive plan that will send a wide spectrum of Virginia Democrats to our national convention," said C. Richard Cranwell, Chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia. "We look forward to representing our commonwealth well in Denver."
