The Newport News Democratic City Committee is issuing the Call to Caucus for an assembled caucus 6 pm Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the Plumber and Steamfitter’s Hall, 7812 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia for the sole purpose of electing 18 Delegates to the 1st Congressional District Convention to be held held at Walker-Grant Middle School, One Learning Lane, Fredericksburg, Virginia from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on May 8th, 2010.

The following provisions shall govern the caucuses to wit:

1. Pre-filing: Those wishing their names to be placed on the ballot at the Caucus shall pre-file their candidacy by 5 p.m., Saturday, March 20th with Co-Chair Gene E. Magruder, 602 River Rd., Newport News, VA 23601. Forms for filing can be downloaded at the Newport News Democratic City Committee website: www.NewportNewsDemocrats.org

2. Conduct the Caucus: The doors to the Caucus will be opened at 5:30 pm. and will close promptly at 6:00 pm. And no further persons will be permitted to enter. Those in line at 6 pm will be permitted to complete the check-in process and will be permitted to participate. In the event that 18 or less delegates file by the filing deadline of March 20, 2010 the chair will cancel the caucus and deem those who have filed as being recognized as delegates to the convention.

3. Candidate Preference. Delegates to the Convention shall have the option of voting uncommitted as well as the option of voting for a candidate. Each person filing as a delegate or alternate to the district may, but is not required to designate on the filing form a candidate preference for the Democratic Party nominee for the office of U.S. House of Representatives. The stated preference, if any, shall be binding on the delegates on the first nomination vote at the District Convention. Persons filing as delegate or alternate who have not expressed a candidate preference will be considered “uncommitted,” and may vote for any candidate on the first ballot, or for “no candidate.
