Newport News Democratic Caucus (Local Caucuses)
The Newport News Democratic Committee will hold an assembled caucus to select delegates to the 2008 State Convention. The Newport News caucus will select 44 delegates to the State Convention. They are as follows:
1st Congressional
5 Clinton Delegates
12 Obama Delegates
3 Clinton Alternates
6 Obama Alternates
3rd Congressional
6 Clinton Delegates
21 Obama Delegates
3 Clinton Alternates
11 Obama Alternates
Call to Caucus:
Whereas, it is the duty of the Newport News Democratic City Committee to issue the
Call to Caucus for the purpose of electing 17 delegates and 9 alternates to the 1st
Congressional District Democratic Convention and 27 delegates and 14 alternates to the 3rd
Congressional District Democratic Convention and the Virginia State Democratic
Convention.
Now therefore be it resolved that the Newport News Democratic City Committee hereby
issues the Call to Caucus to an assembled caucus at 12 noon Saturday, April 19, 2008 at
the Plumber and Steamfitter’s Hall, 7812 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia for the sole purpose of electing 17 Delegates and 9 alternates to the 1st Congressional District
Convention and the Virginia Democratic State Convention and 27 delegates and 14
alternates to the 3rd Congressional District Convention and the Virginia Democratic State
Convention. The following provisions shall govern the caucuses to wit:
1. Pre-filing: Those wishing their names to be placed on the ballot at the Caucus shall
pre-file their candidacy by 5 p.m., Monday, April 14 with Co-Chair Gene E. Magruder,
602 River Rd., Newport News, VA 23601. Forms for filing can be downloaded at the Newport News Democratic City Committee website: www.NewportNewsDemocrats.org . Democratic Presidential preference must be noted on the filing forms.
2. Voluntary Administrative Fee: There shall be a voluntary administrative fee of
twenty-five dollars ($25.00) for each person filing for delegate, payable to the
Newport News Democratic City Committee. Payment of this fee is completely voluntary.
No statement is required in order to waive payment.
3. Notice Requirements: The Newport News Democratic City Committee shall cause
to be published the time, date and location of the Caucus at least 7 days prior to the
Caucus, but not more than 2 weeks before the Caucus. Notice of the pre-filing deadline for delegate and alternate positions shall be published on the state Democratic website at www.virginiademocrats.org , the Newport News Democratic City Committee website, and a press release to a newspaper of general circulation in the locality at least 7 days before the pre-filing deadline but not more than 2 weeks before the deadline.
4. Conduct the Caucus: The doors to the Caucus will be opened at 11:30 a.m. The check-in
will occur between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon. The doors to the Caucus will be closed at
12 noon. and no further persons will be permitted to enter. Those in line at 12 noon
will be permitted to complete the check-in process and will be permitted to
participate.
