Rove and Allen Attack: Someone's Projecting

6/13/2012

Richmond, VA - As George Allen emerges from a primary in which more than a third of Republican voters chose someone else, his old friend and fellow Washington insider Karl Rove is coming to his aid with an ad that (irony alert) casts blame for the economic crisis Allen, Rove and their friend George W. Bush helped create.

The ad is the latest in an onslaught of false and negative attacks run by outside groups in the Senate race that have been rebuked by newspapers, fact checking organizations, and editorial boards. This one is no different.

Virginians remember it was Karl Rove who engineered the budget busting, Wall Street appeasing agenda that helped send our economy off the cliff, and George Allen who supported him every step of the way. While we are sure Karl Rove will continue to blast Virginia airwaves with millions in false, negative advertising, here are the facts:

FACT: It was Tim Kaine's economic policies that helped save Virginia from slipping into the decline that so many other states experienced as a result of the national recession. Under Kaine, Virginia was the best state for business four years running, and unemployment was significantly lower than the national average.

FACT: It was Tim Kaine who balanced budgets by making $5 billion in cuts including reducing his own salary while George Allen ballooned budgets and voted to raise his own pay.

FACT: It was George Allen who voted for every fiscally reckless budget proposal that turned a record surplus to a massive deficit and added three trillion dollars to our country's debt.

"Only in Republican politics would two of the least credible people on Earth when it comes to the economy and the budget conspire to spend millions attacking other people for the disaster they helped create," said DPVA Executive Director David Mills. "Like 49 other Governors, Tim Kaine was forced to respond to a nationwide economic collapse that Allen and Rove helped create - and he succeeded in cutting $5 billion in state spending (starting with his own salary) while protecting core investments like education that create jobs and opportunity for Virginia families.

"No amount of shrill attack ads will change the fact that Governor Kaine steered this Commonwealth through an unprecedented crisis that former Senator Allen spent six years helping to create as a loyal advocate of the disastrous Rove-Bush economic agenda."
