People's Debate: Kaine's Bipartisan Specifics Trump Allen's Empty Partisan Rhetoric
Richmond, VA - Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman Brian Moran released the following statement following the first statewide televised debate of the 2012 U.S. Senate race between Governor Tim Kaine and former Senator George Allen:
"Tonight Virginians saw the clear difference in this race between Tim Kaine's specific, balanced vision for a brighter future and George Allen's unwillingness or inability to offer specifics about how another term in the Senate would differ from the failed six years he already spent there.
"On issue after issue Governor Kaine leveled with Virginians about what it will take to create jobs, balance the budget and keep the middle class moving forward. Allen responded with the same old partisan attacks and empty rhetoric, while refusing repeatedly to take accountability for turning a massive surplus into a massive deficit and adding $3 trillion to the debt while voting four times to raise his own pay during his last term in the Senate.
"Allen couldn't even come up with a specific plan to avoid the damaging defense sequester cuts that have become the centerpiece of his campaign -- the only ideas he did mention would actually make the problem worse.
"Tim Kaine has a specific approach to bring people together, create jobs and balance the budget without hammering the middle class, and he offered that vision clearly tonight. The last thing we need in the U.S. Senate is another Republican Senator who values reckless partisanship over doing what's right for the people of Virginia - that's who George Allen was the last time he was there and he proved tonight that he'd pick up right where he left off if he's reelected."
