Moran applauds Supreme Court ruling on Cuccinelli’s health care crusade
Urges Attorney General to do more for working families
Richmond, VA – DPVA Chairman Brian Moran applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of Ken Cuccinelli’s motion to expedite their consideration of his challenge to federal health care reform. He also urged Cuccinelli to devote more of his office’s resources to fighting for Virginians who are struggling in this economy.
“The Supreme Court did the right thing in requiring our litigious Attorney General to pursue his personal crusade against health reform through the proper legal channels,” said Moran. “It is unfortunate, however, that this ruling all but ensures that this issue will continue to distract Ken Cuccinelli from more important issues for the foreseeable future.
“Instead of using his taxpayer-funded office to challenge a law that has already helped more than 100,000 young Virginians keep their access to health insurance, the Attorney General should devote more of his time and our resources to fighting for middle class families that are struggling to find work and stay in their homes in this difficult economy. Virginians should not have to foot the bill for his personal political agenda.”

Families USA released a report stating that 123,500 Virginia children with pre-existing conditions are now protected from losing their health care thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The report adds that another 53,900 are able to keep their longer than they would have before the reforms took effect.
Recently the General Assembly approved an administration request for $300,000 of additional funding ($60,000 for 2011 and $240,000 for 2012) for additional legal services for the Department of Environmental Quality.
Democrats in the House of Delegates questioned whether that funding would be necessary if current Office of the Attorney General staff were not preoccupied with Cuccinelli’s many ongoing litigations.
