Trip to Grundy

One of my favorite trips in the Ninth District is the curvy section of 460 that leads deep into the center of Buchanan County - one of the most democratic counties throughout Virginia.

Early last week, I made the trek from the banks of the New River to Grundy - nearly a two hour proposition. When I arrived, I immediately entered into a discussion with several of the local candidates for office, including Randy Asbury - Democratic candidate for Sheriff, Shelia Tolliver, Commonwealth's Attorney candidate and several other county party leaders. I was able to speak to a group of the precinct chairs. During the meeting, we were able to exchange a series of best practices from each precinct and I was able to discuss with them the upcoming elections as a group. During the normal business meeting, the party leaders did a terrifc job of setting a campaign strategy moving forward into the 2007 elections.

After the meeting, I had an incredible conversation with Janie Owens, Board of Supervisor candidate in South Grundy. Her experiences were fascinating and she is going to make a terrific addition to the Board of Supervisors in Buchanan County. At some point in the future, I will relay a story that she shared with me about the work she did to help change the life of an injured veteran from Buchanan Co. Her personal dedication, determination and kiind human spirit forever positively impacted the life of this veteran and is one of the most heart warming stories I have heard since I have been working in this profession. It is a story that also spans across Virginia and is a testament to the idea that by working hard every single day to make a positive impact in the lives of others, we, as a collective society ultimately grow.
