The Big Blue Wave in Hampton Roads

Posted by susan on Tuesday, June 05

In my last posting, I mentioned how the local Hampton Roads committees were revving up and moving their committees’ activities to a higher level.  Since then, they have proved that right with activities and plans that are creating real excitement in the Democratic community.   At the April meeting of the Portsmouth Democratic Committee, Chair Cynthia Morrison raised the idea of having a candidates forum so that Democrats from across the city could have the opportunity to hear the candidates before the June primaries.  With help and cooperation with the Chesapeake City Committee, they quickly planned the event for May 31st.

Their hard work and planning paid big dividends.  When Thursday the 31st rolled around, there was standing room only at the Lucas Center where the forum was held.  Members from both committees went the extra mile to accommodate the candidates and the audience, and they presented a wonderful forum – great questions, thoughtful answers and wonderful energy and enthusiasm from everyone there.  A good sign of success with any forum is the “chatter” afterwards – and there was plenty that evening.  Everyone stayed for a while to talk to the candidates and talk amongst themselves about what they had heard that evening.  This forum was a huge success on its most important level – it generated discussion and enthusiasm.  A warm and loud congratulation to Cynthia Morrison, Ella Ward and the members of both city committees for a wonderful evening.

Two days later, just across the river, the Virginia Beach City Committee launched its African-American Caucus with a Saturday morning breakfast with 72 people attending.  There was a great deal of discussion about the plans for the caucus and what it hoped to accomplish.  Outreach Chair Pat Edmonson headed up the effort to organize the breakfast, and Virginia Beach School Board member Reverend Todd Davidson will take a large role in leading the caucus.  Best wishes for success in the launching of this new effort, and we all expect great things.

I know.  You think that is it as far as good news for the party in Hampton Roads, right? Nope. The good news keeps rolling.

On Monday the 4th, the York County and Poquoson Democratic committees joined forces to roll out their highly-regarded slate of candidates for the upcoming fall elections, complete with speeches.  There was Troy Farlow, the Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates representing the 96th House District.  Also, for the first time in a long time, there were three Democratic candidates for the five Board of Supervisors seats in York County.  Suzanne Creasey, Sam Eure and Christopher McDonald offered the crowd a glimpse of the talent and skills of Democrats running for office in that area.    It’s no secret that getting Democrats to succeed in this neck of the woods has not been easy the last few years.  Listening to these four outstanding challengers speak about their plans to lead us as elected Democrats was tremendously encouraging.  Let’s do all that we can to help them and stand with them on Election Day.

And yes – there’s STILL more.  Good Democrats all across Hampton Roads will want to join in the Virginia Beach City Committee’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on June 13th.  The keynote speaker will be former governor (and possible . . . ?) Mark Warner.     This will be a great opportunity for all Dems to come together with one of our esteemed favorites and celebrate the many good things we have accomplished TOGETHER over the last year.  If you want more information, please go to www.vbdemocrats.org or call 757-467-4177.

As a Democrat, there is so much to be excited about  – both for the past year and the coming months.  With all the hard work and long hours, we have much to celebrate.  All of the local committees have been tremendous, and I urge anyone who is interested in getting involved and helping to spread the big blue wave to contact their local committee through the links on this page.  I guarantee it will be time well spent!
