Democrats knock 52,845 doors in record '100 Days' canvass
More than 2,000 volunteers set a record for Virginia Democrats

RICHMOND - Virginia Democrats set a new pre-Labor Day record for grassroots activity this weekend, with 2,019 volunteers knocking on 52,845 doors in neighborhoods across Virginia.

The "100 Days to History" canvass, a joint project of the Democratic Coordinated Campaign and Campaign for Change, engaged Democratic volunteers to talk with their neighbors about Barack Obama, Mark Warner and the Democratic congressional candidates.

"It's only July, but the Democratic grassroots effort looks like late October," said Jared Leopold, Communications Director for the Democratic Party's Coordinated Campaign. "Anyone who's ever worked on a field campaign knows that 50,000 doors is a good number for the weekend before Election Day. But 50,000 in July is unprecedented."

As part of the "100 Days" canvass over the weekend, Gov. Mark Warner, Rep. Bobby Scott (VA-03), Rep. Jim Moran (VA-08) and five Democratic Congressional candidates kicked off neighborhood events. The statewide canvass, which took place in dozens of communities across Virginia, marked the beginning of the 100-day push to Election Day.

With offices opening across the Commonwealth and a surge in volunteers, Virginia Democrats are poised to turn the state blue in November, Leopold said.

"Virginia Republicans keep saying they'll sit on their heels and Virginia will magically fall into the red column," Leopold said. "With this Democratic ground game, Republicans could be in for a big surprise in November."

This weekend's canvasses took place in the following 23 cities and counties:

  • Tidewater - Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg
  • Northern Virginia - Prince William County, Fairfax, Fairfax City, Alexandria, Arlington, Loudoun County
  • Richmond - Chesterfield County, Henrico County
  • New River Valley - Roanoke City, Roanoke County
  • Charlottesville area - Albemarle County, Fluvanna County, Charlottesville
  • Fredericksburg area - Fredericksburg, King George County, Spotsylvania County
