DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF VIRGINIA FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST CHESTERFIELD COUNTY
Richmond- The Democratic Party of Virginia has filed a formal complaint to the State Board of Elections against Chesterfield County. The action stems from widespread voting problems during last week's presidential primary elections.
Immediately after the elections, the DPVA launched its own investigation into reports of extraordinarily long lines, unreasonable delays that caused voters to leave, and some precincts that actually ran out of ballots. Now the DPVA has submitted affidavits to Virginia State Board of Elections Secretary Nancy Rodrigues, and is calling on the SBE to conduct its own extensive investigation.
"Let this be a warning to every city and county that the fundamental right to vote must be cherished and protected," said DPVA General Counsel Jay Myerson. "The law in this great country and in this great state dictates that citizens have the right to vote without facing unnecessary and unreasonably heavy burdens to do so. What happened in Chesterfield County was not a case of a few isolated incidents restricted to one precinct, but a systemic failure of the election process. As a result, people, particularly those with less flexible jobs and family obligations, the elderly and the handicapped, could not overcome those obstacles and did not vote at all."
