Bi-Partisan Group of Legislators Call for Governor to Fix Transportation Plan

Instead of trying to come together across party lines to fix the transportation plan that passed the General Assembly last weekend, the Republican Party of Virginia launched into a partisan attack on those that want to see a true compromise on the transportation plan.

On Saturday, Republicans and Democrats agreed that Governor Kaine should step forward and provide compromise solutions to fix the transportation bill that passed out of the General Assembly last weekend.

Sen. John C. Watkins (R-Chesterfield) provided the bill's margin of victory after calling it failed legislation that needed to be kept alive so the governor could amend it. "It is perverse logic that I stand here before you and urge you to vote for something I think is inoperable," Watkins told senators before voting to approve it. (The Washington Post, 2/25/07)

Senator Hanger (R-Augusta) was of the same mind, ticking off several provisions he disliked, then saying, "We have a vehicle here" that the governor could mold into a better plan. (Daily Press, 2/25/07)

"It's a perfectly awful bill," said Sen. John Edwards, D-Roanoke. "There's something in there for everybody to hate. (Roanoke Times 2/25/07)

"Governor Tim Kaine has shown leadership to find a compromise solution on transportation," Democratic Party of Virginia Executive Director Amy Reger said. "Instead of listening to the calls of Republican and Democratic legislators asking the Governor to find a compromise solution, the Republican Party launched into attack mode, furthering the partisan divide instead of seeking solutions to our transportation crisis."
