Asian Pacific Americans and Democrats
Posted by Joe on Wednesday, May 30
Aloha,
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and I was honored to participate in various activities in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC. Asian American and Pacific Islander voters have been trending toward the Democratic Party over the past two decades. And as these diverse communities in Virginia grow, it makes sense to continually reach out and include these voters in our activities.

I had the privilege of speaking before the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee's Breakfast on May 12. As the VBDC continues their outreach into the large Filipino American community, I was able to give them a little insight from my growing up in Norfolk and my experience organizing with the greater Asian American community.

The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies Summit and Dinner has become a staple of May celebrations. Its the bi-partisan support organization to the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, chaired by Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA). It was a stellar affair and I was able to connect with folks from around the country.
Over the past wo years, I've been assisting with the development of the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia as an official constituency group under the Democratic Party of Virginia. DAAV held a well attended Happy Hour at Matsutake Restaurant in Arlington, VA. We were joined by Delegates Al Eisenberg, Vivian Watts, Mark Sickles and Adam Ebbin. Jeanette Rishell, Democratic Candidate for the 50th House of Delegates District, was also able to say a few words about her candidacy. I support Jeanette because she'll represent the interests of the 50th District well and is also a fellow Filipino American.

The Democratic Congressional Leadership held a Town Hall on Capitol Hill and Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid spoke about the many contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. They also focused on issues that affect all Americans and the work we have ahead of us. Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA 3) spoke to issues ranging from civil liberties to education.

The Democratic National Committee held a reception in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and participants were able to hear Chairman Howard Dean's vision for the Party as an inclusive and strong force.
As we move forward, let us share in the richness of our diversity!
Aloha!

I predict that, when Howard Dean steps down as DNC Chair, Mike Honda will be our next Chairman.
