2008 Delegate Selection Plan

Posted by Danae on Friday, November 16

With the 2008 Presidential elections fast approaching, the Democratic Party of Virginia wants voters across the Commonwealth to understand our process for selecting delegates to attend the national Democratic convention in Denver, Colorado (Aug. 25-28). At that convention, delegates will select the Democratic Presidential nominee.

The delegate selection process is quite involved. The following links provide details about the process and other helpful information.

The Virginia Democratic Convention will be held on June 14, 2008 in Hampton.

The answer provided to FAQ III 3. is confusing. This is about types of delegates and how they are selected. Five types are listed: 54 District Delegates, 31 At Large Delegates, 11 Pledged PLEO Delegates, 18 Unpledged PLEO Delegates, and 2 Add-on Delegates. This could be read to mean 116 total delegates.

However the summary in Attachment A seems to indicate that the 11 Pledged PLEO Delegates and the 2 Add-on Delegates are part of the abovementioned 31 At Large Delegates. The 18 Unpledged PLEO Delegates in the list are not part of the 31 At Large group but are in addition to the 31. Adding to the confusion is the fact that there must be an entirely different 18 PLEO Delegates, not separately listed in the explanation, that are pledged and who make up the remainder of the 31 At Large Delegates, making a total of 103 delegates.

Perhaps there is no easy way to outline the various types and numbers, but the answer to FAQ III 3. could be rewritten to clear up some of the confusion.

I was approached by woman tonight outside of the Vienna metro and she asked me to sign a petition to get Hillary Clinton on the primary ballot. I signed it and gave my address but now I’m wondering if she and the request was legit. Isn’t Hillary already on the ballot for Feb. 12th? Could you please clear this up for me? Thank you.

Mr. Hall—you are correct—FAQ III 3 should read “18” for the number of “at large” delegates (not 31).  We will correct that.  Page 13 of the FAQs contains a chart which we hope sets out the different categories clearly.

Ms. Padgett - I am sure that the petition was legit.  To get on the primary ballot, candidates need to submit at least 5,000 of their own signatures in addition to the 5,000 signatures that State Party and its volunteers are collecting. So if you have not signed one of the state party petitions, please feel free to sign individual petitions.

thanks

The answer regarding the petition to get Hillary on the primary ballot is that it is legit. Virginia State Law requires that each candidate to have 10,000 signatures on the petitionsto be allowed to be put on the primary ballot And the DEADLINE is fast approaching...they must be filed by Senator Clinton on the 14th of this month.  I am collecting signatures as well so anyone in Harrisonburg/Rockingham area please contact me if you wish for Hillary to be on the primary.  If any doubt you can contact the Clinton campaign headquarters.
You can call me on my cell at 540-246-3057. Thanks!!smile
