2007 Candidates in Hampton Roads

This past Saturday a crowd of Democratic supporters enjoyed a relaxing few hours with many of our 2007 Democratic candidates in Hampton Roads. The gathering spot was the sun-dappled back yard of Norfolk Democratic activist Vivian Paige. It was a lovely, peaceful waterfront setting, complete with geese and goslings waiting patiently at the shore on the offchance anyone might offer a hotdog bun.

The crowd at Vivian's event included members of the Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach Democratic committees and 3rd District chair, Barbara Klear. All of us were treated to an eloquent and passionate speech by Delegate Brian Moran. The subject was who we are as Democrats and why we must win in November. Standing with Delegate Moran as he urged the crowd to take an active role in helping elect Democrats this year were Senate challenger Ralph Northam, House challengers Joe Bouchard, Bob MacIver, and Bobby Mathieson, and incumbent Democratic legislators Senator Yvonne Miller and Delegate Paula Miller.

Vivian Paige's home is in the 6th Senate district, where Dr. Ralph Northam is mounting a strong bid to unseat a Republican incumbent who has been steeped in controversy. In addition to Ralph Northam, Vivian will also be to vote and volunteer for well loved Democratic Delegate Paula Miller, who is runing for re-election in the 8th House district.

Earlier this month Delegate Miller got her campaign started off in a big way when over 300 people turned out to the Knights of Columbus Hall for her campaign kickoff! The energy in the room was very high. What was particularly impressive about the showing was the number of Republicans and Independents there to show their support of their friend Paula.

In terms of speeches, Sheriff Bob McCabe and Commonwealth's Attorney Jack Doyle got things going. Then when Delegate Miller was introduced, everyone put down their burgers and hot dogs to treat her to what was clearly a heartfelt standing ovation.

In her remarks Delegate Miller talked about her strong ties to the community and about the issues that she has worked diligently to promote. She addressed the need to find solutions to our transportation problem, lower our tax burden, improve our schools and keep our communities safe. She also trumpeted some of her legislative accomplishments, such as providing real-estate tax relief to many Norfolk residents and co-sponsoring a bill that prevents teens from using their cell phones while they are driving.

At the closing of her remarks Delegate Miller received yet another standing ovation. It was a terrific event that spoke to just how beloved she is in the community.

Thanks for the update. Sorry I missed Vivian’s get -together. I’ve been impressed with Delegate Miller’s campaigns and, more importantly, her performance in Richmond.

Good writeup, Susan. Minor correction - Paula Miller is the delegate - my delegate - in the 87th House district. I hope all will find the time to get involved with her campaign and help her return to Richmond.
